Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics Simulations, Supernova Feedback, Galaxy Formation
Scientific paper
This dissertation describes simulations that represent the evolution of galaxies using N-body smoothed particle hydrodynamic simulations of galaxy formation. The simulations present a novel recipe for star formation and the consequent supernova feedback. Using an isolated Milky Way-like galaxy, we constrain these recipes based on well-established observational results. The recipes are then employed in a number of environments including isolated galaxies of several different masses and a large cosmological volume. The supernova feedback is effective at delaying star formation in low mass galaxies. The feedback also drives winds from low mass galaxies. In these winds, we find that stars can form and populate a stellar halo surrounding dwarf galaxies that compares well with the observed stellar halos surrounding Local Group Dwarfs.
