The first observations of the LMC supernova SN 1987a are summarized and discussed. Images are provided, and consideration is given to the question of classification (type I or type II), the possible precursor (a binary with a B3 I blue-supergiant component), P Cyg profiles in the Balmer lines (indicating a hot gas shell streaming outward at 17,400 km/s), absorption lines from interstellar and intergalactic clouds in the line of sight, and cosmic-ray-neutrino and gravitational-wave observations related to the SN explosion.
