If standard relativity fails at the Planck scale or at some other fundament al length scale, superluminal particles may be the ultimate building blocks of matter. Energy dependent patterns of Lorentz symmetry violation (LSV) are naturally generated in such scenarios, and are compatible with the very stringent experimental bounds on LSV obtained from low-energy experiments. We discuss theoretical and experimental properties of a class of superluminal particles (superbradyons) whose kinematical properties would be close to those of "ordinary" particles (particles with critical speed in vacuum equal to c, the speed of light) apart from the difference in critical speed (c_i, critical speed, gg ~c for superbradyons).
