The Hg-bearing compound designated Hg1201 presently discussed has only one CuO2 layer per unit cell, and has been found to be superconducting below 94 K. Its structure is similar to that of Tl-1201, but its transition temperature is much higher. This material, which combines a very high Tc with a single HgO layer, may be important in technological applications in virtue of the apparent association between the smaller spacing between CuO2 planes and superior superconducting properties in a magnetic field.
