Sunspots, dark `blemishes' on the brilliant solar surface, were discovered telescopically by Galileo and his contemporaries in 1611. Records of exceptionally large, naked-eye sunspots are found in Chinese and Greek records as early as 325 BC. The fortuitous occurrence of smoke or fog darkened the Sun enough to safely reveal the dark spots to the rare observer who would record his surprising view....
