The Heidelberg University Library owns a few manuscripts that belong to the genre of German Volkskalender. These books contain, for instance, the Christian calendar, the lunar phases, the cycles of Sun and Moon, and advice is given how to cope with everyday life. A masterpiece is the Schicksalsbuch ("Book of Fate") which displays a plenty of marvelous illustrations on parchment. In the present paper, special attention is focused on the art and astronomy of this extraordinary manuscript.
