The effects of solar activity, particularly as evidenced by charged particle flows, on the earth atmosphere are discussed. Variations in the photon flux from the entire solar disk with the solar cycle are considered, and the planned surveillance of the solar constant and charged particle fluxes by the Nimbus-G and ISEE satellites and Spacelab is indicated. Interactions between solar photons and particles and the earth atmosphere are then examined, with attention given to the transmission, scattering and absorption of visual and near IR radiation, photoionization in the thermosphere and ionosphere by energetic photons (UV, X-ray), and ozone chemistry in the stratosphere. Atmospheric variations of solar origin are then considered, including diurnal variations in the properties of the thermosphere and ionosphere, magnetic storms, terrestrial phenomena such as sudden ionospheric disturbances and polar cap absorption associated with solar eruptions, and possible meteorological and climatic factors. The significance of further investigations of sun-earth interactions is then discussed.
