The basic objective of the Apollo 17 mission was to sample basin rim highland material and adjacent mare material and investigate the geological evolutionary relationship between these two major units. In general, obtained data were similar to those of earlier Apollo lunar missions. An event of great interest was the discovery of deposits of orange glass on a crater rim; indications are that the orange glass is about 3.7 x 10 to the ninth power years old. The seismic profiling experiment confirmed a three layer model for the valley floor with a homogeneous lithosphere that encloses an asthenosphoric zone of partial melting. Moonquake activity appeared to be concentrated at the boundary between these two zones.
