Geological and photographic studies of the Apollo 15 landing site gave similar results to those from earlier Apollo landing sites. Heat flow measurements in the lunar crust established the moon as a far more radioactive body than had been previously suspected. Preliminary data on gamma ray activity of the lunar surface showed a strong contrast in count rates over different regions of the moon, and preliminary X-ray fluorescent measurements indicated a difference in chemical compositions for maria and highlands.
