Geomagnetic Field: Secular Variations

Scientific paper

A sudden change in the series describing the first derivatives of the mean annual values of the geomagnetic elements was observed between 1977 and 1980. Treating these jerks as smooth stepwise increases in the constant acceleration enables us to interpret this phenomenon as a typical jerk. Spherical harmonic analysis is used to construct a global constant-acceleration field relative to 1985. Comparison of the pre-jerk and post-jerk maps of the global distribution of the constant acceleration revealed the presence of quantitative errors in the post-jerk maps. The large error in the post-jerk maps can be explained by the fact that the initial data are worse because of a lack of current data and non-uniformity of the observatory network used. The statistical correlation between jerks and years of maximum solar activity was also valid for this jerk.
