The use of SIS tunnel junctions as mixers in submillimeterwave heterodyne receivers provides the best possible sensitivities up to frequencies as high as 500 GHz. Several laboratories have now demonstrated that SIS receivers in that regime have better sensitivity than the more traditional Schottky instruments. In addition, the low level of local oscillator power required for SIS receivers makes further development especially attractive for the high frequencies, possibly up into the THz regime. A fabrication process of niobium tunnel junctions and their application in waveguide mixers for the 330 to 380 GHz as well as the 410 to 490 GHz bands are described. The use of SIS detectors in planar antennas is especially promising for applications in imaging array receivers. The use of planar double dipole antennas in combination with ellipsoidal lenses is described.
