Earth-orbiting OGO-5 first sensed from space the local interstellar medium more than 30 years ago. The Voyagers are still approaching the termination shock after 25 years of journey. Studying the outer heliosphere from within, based on knowledge already gained and using more advanced techniques, seems only logically desirable and logistically economical. We cite examples of what has been learned and what can be learned in using pickup-ion and energetic neutral-atom measurements on ACE and SOHO at Earth's orbit, closely coupled with realistic model simulations on the acceleration and propagation of charged particles in the heliosphere. The topics being addressed include: particle distributions in the local interstellar medium, shock strength of the termination shock, solar modulation of cosmic rays, pre-acceleration of pickup ions before becoming anomalous cosmic rays at the termination shock, and propagation of anomalous cosmic rays in the heliosheath. We present numerical simulations on the predicted directional distribution - "seen" from Earth's orbit - of energetic neutral atoms produced by charge exchange between interstellar neutral atoms and energetic ions accelerated at different sites; e.g., corotating interaction regions and between the solar-wind termination shock and the heliopause. We conclude with some suggestions for desirable and feasible approaches for future missions to observe the heliosphere and its interaction with the local interstellar medium from the inner heliosphere.
