To study cluster evolution and put constraints on cosmological models we are studying the most massive (z~0.3) clusters from the REFLEX sample and compare their temperature function to that of nearby clusters. Striving for precision we have made these clusters a benchmark sample for detailed studies with XMM-Newton, ESO VLT, and gravitational lensing. Using the observed temperature function we want to study how much the temperature mass conversion is biased by cluster mergers. To analyse this effect in detail we have selected those clusters which show the most distorted XMM temperature and entropy maps, to study the internal structure in more detail with Chandra. The merger history will be reconstructed in conjunction with intense optical spectroscopic ESO VLT-VIMOS observations.
