I will briefly recall the payload and performances of the X-ray Multi-mirror Mission (XMM), with emphasis on its unique capabilities for cosmological studies of galaxy clusters. The exceptional sensitivity of XMM, associated with good spectroscopic imaging capabilities, will allow the detection and observations of clusters out to cosmological distances (z>1). I will present simulations of such observations and summarize the Garanteed Time Programmes on distant clusters.
