Very Large Telescopes: Mirrors

Scientific paper

The development of astronomy demands large and very large telescopes. Some 8 m, 10 m, 16 m, even 25 m aperture telescopes are in their research stage in different countries. The Research Center of Astronomical Instruments has completed successfully a 2.16 m optical telescope and has accumulated a wealth of experience on grinding and polishing large mirrors. This paper presents a practical project and reports on laboratory work concerning the fabrication of a large polishing machine which should be able to produce mirrors up to 8 m.
