An automatic method of classification is applied in a morphological study of the large Virgo cluster area. The method uses the nonhierarchical-descendant process described by Fages (1974). The procedure leads to the classification of a sample of 265 galaxies into seven categories, and variance analysis applied to diameters and morphological types shows significant discrimination, although these parameters were not used in the classification procedure. The principal features described by de Vaucouleurs are confirmed, and new groups are suggested. These groups are a very significant background group in the W-cloud direction, a less-well defined background group in the Y-cloud direction, and a small velocity group in the W-cloud direction.
