Component requirements were derived for IR astronomical spectroradiometric observations throughout the IR spectrum from a spaceborne cryogenically cooled telescope, operating either from a space platform or as a free flyer. A mission model in which a one meter diameter cooled telescope conducts a spectroradiometric sky survey in six IR channels extending over the range 5 micrometers to 1 mm, and covering the complete celestial sphere in 6 months, was used as a basis. Details of the final design covering optics, cryogenics (liquid helium), and the detection subsystem of the model telescope are presented. Adaptability to shuttle operation is considered, and component development requirements are detailed.
