An analysis is presented on the proton flare occurring at 8.01 UT on July 3, 1974. The morphological evolution of the flare as observed in the H-alpha line is reported, with reference to both corpuscular emission and associated EM radiation. A tenuous filament observed in absorption at plus 1.0 A at flare maximum is pointed out. Penetration of the flare into the spot umbra is noted. Some questions are posed on the time of onset of the filament, on whether the filament is indicative of greater umbral field intensity or greater energy flux.
