The accuracy of astrometric observations of comets in the past 200 yr is discussed, particularly Halley's comet at its 1759, 1835 and 1910 apparitions. The influence of the positions of reference stars, the accuracy of relative measurements between comets and stars with various techniques, and optimum equipment for observations of comets are considered.
