ST is uniquely equipped to study in detail the narrow line region in nearby AGN. Here we outline a program of broad band imaging on a carefully selected samples of objects designed to exploit ST for these purposes. The aims are to study the following: -structure of the line emission region to test the unified scheme for Seyferts galaxies -morphological relations between radio and optical emission -morphological relations between continuum and line optical emission to detect scattered nuclear emission -ionization state and ionization processes in the NLR from the comparison of different ionization lines, OII and OIII -dynamics of the emitting gas -direct imaging of the ionizing ultraviolet continuum and obscuration properties of the nuclear regions -energetics of the nuclear source compared with observations at other wavelengths, X-ray and IR
