Chandra Proposal Id #04700238

Scientific paper

This proposal will follow up one of the most exciting recent discoveries by Chandra: An observation of a probable X-ray jet (Schwartz, 2002b) associated with the second most distant quasar known, SDSS1306+0356. If powerful quasar jets emit X-rays via inverse Compton on the Cosmic Microwave Background, they will be seen with constant surface brightness to as large a redshift at which they exist. Study of the most distant X-ray jet will help confirm and characterize this hypothesis, and will bear on the puzzle of how such a powerful quasar can form so early in the universe. I will release the fits file of data for the quasar core to the community immediately. (URL: http://asc.harvard.edu/acis/dschwartz.html)
