Profiles from boron analytical data for the Mansfield and Ryhope marine bands at three localities show marked similarities. Within the marine band higher boron concentrations are found than either above or below it. When faunal evidence is considered, however, it must be concluded that the boron/paleosalinity relationship is complex, and that the differing interpretations based on paleontological evidence and boron data are not in this case made more compatible by considering boron/potash ratios. A survey of the analytical data of previous workers in the field leads to the postulation of a new mechanism of boron concentration which rationalizes much of the conflicting literature on boron and paleosalinity.
