The magnetic field structure in external galaxies is mostly unresolved in radio polarization maps. Only in some interarm regions between optical spiral arms and in the outer parts of galaxies regular fields on kpc scales are observed. Analysis of geometrical depolarization and Faraday depolarization in spiral arms indicates a field component with ~= 20 pc coherence length, possibly a regular field tangled by turbulent motions of gas clouds or other processes related to star formation. The structure function of the distribution of polarized intensity of NGC 6946 indicates that the large-scale fluctuations can be described as two-dimensional turbulence. Radio polarization observations in our own Galaxy reveal structures on various scales, but the separation of Faraday effects in a foreground screen from real magnetic features is difficult.
