An examination of the Venusian atmosphere is presented using spectroscopic and luminosity measurements of the entire troposphere below 64 km, at a wavelength of 0.62 microns. Direct temperature and pressure measurements, as well as a study of both the structure and microphysical properties of the clouds and the character of surface soils are also presented. Data were obtained on water vapor content, together with estimates on the upper limit of nitrogen content, oxygen content, and carbon dioxide concentration. Sunlight was found to be greatly attenuated and scattered in the Venusian clouds, with a considerable portion not reaching the surface. In studying water vapor content it was determined that condensate water droplets were (as opposed to earth) in equilibrium with water vapor pressure. An analysis of the upper atmosphere showed the existence of a nonthermal component corresponding to a temperature of approximately 1200 K. A water history of Venus was briefly reviewed and it was found to be unclear how a water-possessing Venus could have displaced a water mass comparable to that contained in the Pacific Ocean.
