The location of the flickering light source in the dwarf nova Z Cha in different photometric states is investigated by studying the rms-scatter in the light curves as a function of phase. The applied method is outlined in some detail, and possible systematic effects are discussed. It is found that the main part of the flickering is confined to a narrow range in the immediate vicinity of the white dwarf in Z Cha. However, depending on the photometric state other sources may contribute to the flickering. In particular, in quiescence the hot spot appears to contribute non-negligibly to the flickering.
