The results of applying the 'canonical' geomagnetic depth sounding analysis to a separation of the external origin S(q) geomagnetic variation field are discussed. The input data use the harmonics of the S(q) field from the detailed analysis of Parkinson (1977). The seasonal dependence in the derived components of the purely external field, as well as the role of the equatorial electrojet and its seasonal variation, are clearly recognizable. The equatorial electrojet appears to affect geomagnetic records at geomagnetic latitudes of less than about plus or minus 20 deg in the two hemispheres. The uses of the results in deriving the global external field at the considered frequencies are discussed.
