UBV, RI, JHKLM photometry of 14 O-type stars located in the direction of the Carina Nebula have been analyzed in connection with the anomalously high values of the ratio of total to selective extinction (R) determined by several authors (Herbst, 1976; Forte, 1978). The analysis shows, without exception, that the extinction laws in the directions of the 14 stars are anomalous and are characterized by a mean value of R = 3.9 + or - 0.1 (s.d.). This result is not necessarily in conflict with that obtained by Turner and Moffat (1979): R = 3.20 + or - 0.28 (s.e.), since the method they have used (the variable extinction method) is valid for the general region of the Carina Nebula.
