A new spectroscopic orbit of the Algol system V505 Sgr is used to determine the mass ratio. The velocity measures themselves are based on fitting theoretical profiles, generated by a physical model of the binary, to the observed cross-correlation function (ccf). Such profiles match this function very well, much better in fact than Gaussian profiles which are generally used. Measuring the ccf's with Gaussian proflies yields a mass ratio of 2.02 and a detached system whereas fitting with the theoretical profiles yields a mass ratio of 2.18 and a semidetached configuration. Evidence is presented which shows that V505 Sgr is not a member of the Lambda Boo class of variables. The system comprising an A 2V primary, a secondary of G and a tertiary of unknown type, is unreddened at a distance of 120 + or - 5 pcs.
