Astronomical Geodesy: History Of Astronomy

Scientific paper

A first international GPS experiment was performed in October 1994 at three stations of the Russian-Scandinavian measurements of the arc of the meridian (RSAM) 1816 - 1855. The results obtained are in accordance with all the estimates of accuracy made by F. G. W. Struve in his 1857 final account. High quality of mathematical processing applied by him to the variety of the collected RSAM data is stressed. Struve's value of the total length of the arc is very close to the result derived from the GPS data, due to a rare effect of mutual compensation of the actual RSAM errors.
