I HAVE photographed the Raman band of water excited by the mercury line 2536 at a temperature of 17° C. with a Hilger EI spectrograph and exposures of about 125 hours. In the place of the two or three components which, according to the observations of other workers on the water bands corresponding to the same frequency difference and excited by the mercury lines 3650 or 4358, are found, I observed at least nine weak and diffuse components, which could not be reproduced but could be clearly seen with the naked eye under suitable conditions of illumination.
