Dated impact craters on the Earth constitute a chronological record of bombardment that may indirectly reveal the spatial distribution of comets in Oort's comet cloud. By using simple arguments, it is suggested that the active part of the Oort cloud may well consist mainly of the observed outer halo and that, if so, interstellar molecular clouds would probably serve as the only efficient triggers of comet showers.
