The paper examines recent data consisting of direct measurements of plasma temperature and concentration as well as the mass and charge composition of ions in the plasmasphere. These data confirm the existence of two zones in the plasmasphere: an inner zone (L less than 3), which is stable, quasi-steady, and cold; and an outer zone, which is usually warm, essentially unsteady, and with large longitudinal gradients of parameters. It is noted that there is, at present, no generally accepted model which adequately describes the main features of the observed plasmapause structure and dynamics.
