A review of analytical models of the geomagnetic field reveals the
following contradiction: rot sub z B not equal to 0 and phi Bd l = 0. It
is argued that this contradiction can be associated only with
substantial errors of the initial models. Certain applied aspects of
this contradiction are examined.
