Rb-Sr and Sm-Nd measurements were obtained on Footwall Breccia samples originating from the North Range of the Sudbury impact structure in Canada. The Rb-Sr isochron age of 1.825 + or - 0.021 Ga derived is interpreted as a cooling age after the thermal metamorphism of the Footwall Breccia by the 1.85 Ga old Sudbury Igneous Complex. The results exclude bedrocks exposed in the South Range and rocks now forming the sedimentary filling of the Sudbury basin as major components in the matrix of the analyzed Footwall Breccia. It is suggested that there is an exclusively local origin for the matrix and fragments of this breccia, and that the Fotwall Breccia is part of the uplifted floor of the Sudbury crater.
