The absolute UV continuum flux distribution (IUE SWP, and LWR spectra) of nine cataclysmic variables is compared with several steady state optically thick accretion disk models. For most of the systems, the flux distribution is not well explained by these approaches. The shapes of the UV continua can alternatively be interpreted as superposition of two black body sources: a hot component originating from the boundary layer, and a cooler component which is radiated by the accretion disk and/or the bright spot.
