The abnormally low electron density in the Saturn ionosphere observed at the morning terminator by the Pioneer 11 radio occultation experiment is explained in terms of interactions between the ring system and the ionosphere. It is suggested that water ions produced by reactions of hydroxyl ions sputtered from ice on the surface of ring particles with the dense cloud of hydrogen atoms surrounding the ring system could rapidly combine with ionospheric electrons and decrease the electron density. Numerical computations are presented which confirm that the weak contamination of the Saturn upper atmosphere by hydrogen-oxygen compounds produced by the ring system can efficiently remove electrons from the Saturn ionosphere.
