Preliminary runs at a synchrocyclotron and a medium energy accelerator to test detectors, electronics, and software for measurements on muonic and pionic atoms are described. The purpose of the measurements is to describe the nuclear matter density dependence of that part of the optical pion-nuclear potential that describes pion absorption. Measurements of quadrupole moments of nuclei in a model independent way were carried out. The pion/muon telescope and germanium detector with NaI anti-Compton background were tested and analyzed with the developed sotfware. Time of flight spectra were collected to determine the beam composition in the muon extraction channel. Results show good functioning of the instruments. In the time of flight spectra the presence of pions, muons, and positons is clearly demonstrated.
