Synthetic spectra are presently fitted to observations of HCN's (1-0) line at 88.6 GHz on Titan, in order to derive the compound's stratospheric vertical distribution. An increase in HCN with altitude is noted, and a mean mixing ratio scale height of 47 (+36, -11) km is derived for the 100-300 km altitude region. The results obtained are in keeping with recent Voyager IR measurements, although the vertical concentration gradient observed is much steeper, and the lower-stratosphere abundance smaller, than predicted by extant photochemical models; it is suggested that theoretical HCN profiles may be harmonized with these results by reducing the magnitude assumed for stratospheric vertical-eddy mixing.
