Twelve stratospheric profiles of the circulation over Tartagal, Argentina (22° S.) were obtained with meteorological rocket systems on 11-12 November 1966 on an intensive observational schedule. These data are compared with similar data for Ascension Island 8° S.), Barking Sands (22° N.) and White Sands Missile Range (32° N.). Diurnal variations in the circulation of the Southern Hemisphere stratopause summer at Tartagal are indicated to be well organized and similar to those observed in lower middle latitudes of the Northern Hemisphere summer. Marked differences in diurnal stratopause structure of tropical regions which are indicated by Ascension Island data are not apparent in the Tartagal data. The extent of the highly organized stratopause thermal tidal circulation is thus indicated to be equatorward of twenty-two degrees latitude. The hemispheric circulations are indicated by these data to be similar within the accuracy and variability limits of the data.
