In many cases, vertical sounding ionograms reveal the simultaneous presence of several types of Es. In the present paper, an attempt is made to interpret this phenomenon. It is suggested that meteor streams contain bodies with different densities, which are responsible for ionization at different heights. In the presence of density maxima in a meteor stream, one may expect the integral ion-production function (and hence, the vertical electron density distribution resulting from meteor-induced ionization) to possess several maxima. A model solution of the problem of ion production by meteor particles is obtained, and is seen to correlate with the above hypothesis.
