Nova and Novette are large complex experimental laser facilities which require extensive and sophisticated control systems for their successful operation. The design and performance of the Nova/Novette laser control system is presented. Special emphasis is given to certain invisible aspects such as overall strategy, management, resources, and historical constraints. It is concluded that these aspects often have a more profound effect upon success of operation than any specific hardware/software design.
