In many plasma physics and charged-particle beam dynamics problems, soft Coulomb collisions are modeled by a Fokker-Planck equation. I will discuss how to incorporate these collisions in the dynamics of the phase space distribution function using stochastic (Langevin) techniques. The method is based on a three-dimensional Particle-In-Cell approach implemented on high-performance parallel computers. The treatment is fully self-consistent and the friction and diffusion coefficients are computed directly from first principles. Physical problems studied include the approach to equilibrium in systems with highly anisotropic initial velocity distributions. Other interesting cases are spatially inhomogeneous systems as well as situations where more than one charged-particle species exist. Work is in progress to apply our technique to intrabeam scattering in accelerators.
