We present STIS--CCD spectra covering the range 2100-3100 Angstroms for
both A&B images of the gravitational lens candidate UM 425. Although
the spectrum of B has a low S/N ratio, we detect Broad Absorption Lines
which confirms the lens nature of the system. We discuss the
implications for the modelling of the lens.
