The long slit capabilities of STIS will be used to investigate the stellar population and interstellar environment of the galaxy NGC 4194. Imaging of galaxies with WFPC2 has indicated the presence of knots of blue stars in many galaxies. It has been suggested that these knots may be young globular clusters. Ultraviolet and visible wavelength STIS images of NGC 4194 will determine whether such knots are present in this galaxy. The imaging will be used to identify the location and strength of these knots. We will then select a slit orientation or orientations for STIS to obtain ultraviolet and visible wavelength spectra of as many knots as possible, to investigate the characteristics of the objects in these regions. Because we will obtain spectra over the entire STIS wavelength range, we will also be able to analyze nebular lines produced in HII regions in this galaxy. Parallel observations around the galaxies will search for young star clusters or faint companions which may have stimulated the starburst activity.
