In a cycle 1 program, we obtained the first FOS spectra of O stars in M31. These observations were very successful. The spectra enabled us to study the stellar winds of five stars, deriving mass-loss rates and velocity laws from wind line-profile fitting with the SEI method, and information on the abundances. In all stars we find differences between M31 and the Milky Way, suggesting global differences in the star formation history. Interstellar extinction curves were derived within M31, and the galactic and M31 ISM absorption lines could be separated by the high rotation velocity of M31. This work needs to be extended to more stars, at different locations in M31 (to test for dependence on galactocentric distance), to different spectral types, and to stars in the other major galaxy of the Local Group, M33. We propose to obtain FOS spectra of a carefully selected group of hot stars in these galaxies. For the new selected targets we have accurate spectral types from our ground based high resolution, high S/N spectra, ground-based optical photometry and UV flux levels known from either IUE spectra or UIT photometry. Targets are selected in uncrowded regions, to avoid acquisition problems and UV flux contamination from companions. We plan PC images to check for faint companions of the target stars, and parallel images with WFPC to study the OB populations in M31 and M33.
