Methods of stellar spectroscopy which are available to the amateur, i.e., are cheap and simple to operate, are outlined with reference to their accuracy. The principles of light diffraction through a prism are reviewed, and spectrographic methods based on these principles are described, including projection, and a microscope with micrometer slits. Attention is given to the photometric registration method, which can be employed with a telescope objective.
