We compute the energy spectra of the gravitational radiation emitted when a mass m is scattered by a star of mass M >> m, and the corresponding waveforms. While these processes have been studied extensively in the case of masses scattered by black holes, this is the first calculation done for stars in a perturbative approach. We shall show that the pulsation modes of the star are excited by the close encounter with the perturbing mass, and compare the result with similar calculations done for black holes which, conversely, show no excitation of the black hole quasi-normal modes.
