A brief account of the Basel three-color photometric survey of
high-latitude fields is given. The current programs aiming at a more
detailed and comprehensive interpretation of the photographic
observations are described, and a few preliminary results on the stellar
populations and luminosity functions in the galactic halo are discussed.
