We present the results of a photometric and spectroscopic study of 321 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) at z 3. The majority of galaxes in the sample (80%) have near and mid-infrared wavelength coverage, enabling robust population synthesis modeling. With the aim of understanding the nature of Lyα emission and its relationship to global galaxy properties, the best-fit stellar parameters from population synthesis modeling (mass, stellar age, dust extinction, and SFR) are correlated with the morphology and strength of the Lyα feature. The large sample size enables data to be subdivided into groups according to both observable (e.g., Lyα equivalent width, luminosity) and best-fit (e.g., stellar mass, age) properties. We construct composite rest-frame UV spectra of galaxies in these subgroups and examine the relationship between spectral morphology and best-fit stellar parameters from population synthesis modeling. We find that objects with large Lyα equivalent widths are generally older, less dusty, and lower in SFR than LBGs with Lyα in absorption. We compare these results to recent studies and investigate the evolutionary nature of Lyα emission in LBGs.
