The development of the theory of dynamos in stars is examined. The marginal mode, i.e., the mode which is easiest to excite, reflects properties of the nonlinear solution in case the system does not operate far from the margin to the dynamo unstable region. There the solutions show symmetries with respect to the axis of rotation and the equatorial plane, properties which are, e.g., to a large extent fulfilled for the solar average magnetic field. The dynamo is discussed from the viewpoint of the linear theory. Results of nonlinear investigations and correlations to observational findings are examined as well.
